RECORD SHARK Catch in Streaky Bay
On 26 April 1990 local young fisherman Dion Gilmore caught a Great White Pointer shark by rod and reel.
Caught 22 kms out of Streaky Bay the shark tired and was gaffed after a 5 hour and 15 minute struggle.
The massive shark caught on a 24 kg line weighed in at 1520 kgs and was more than 5m long.
It is believed to be the biggest in the world caught on a 24 kg line – a world record!
It took 3 hours to tow the shark into the Streaky Bay Jetty where it was weighed at the local wheat silos.
The mature female shark was estimated to be 16 to 18 years old, and was used by researchers to obtain data.
The fibreglass replica Great White shark is housed in the display room along with other interesting information about local Streaky Bay sea life.
